Trip Itinerary

Day 1: 18th August 2022 - Arrival at Kigali International Airport

Responsible Travel AfricaYou’ll be picked at the Airport and be transferred to the Tea house Kigali for overnight stay.

Day 2: 19th August 2022 - Drive to Akagera

After breakfast, you will be picked up and drive for 2 hours, 3O minutes to Akagera. Upon arrival you will register and go for a short game drive. After the drive, have a short lunch in the hotel and later head for a sunset boat on lake Ihema in search for water lovers like Nile crocodiles and Hippos, you will sail along the water edge, which is covered with several trees, drift past numerous giant hippos on the shore. You will Camp at Muyumbu, a beautiful spot in the middle of the park (but surrounded by a fence for safety).

Day 3: 20th August 2022 - Full Game drive

After breakfast you will head for a full game drive from southern to the northern part of the park. The full day game drive offers you more opportunities to spot a variety of wild animals that you might have missed yesterday such as elephants, buffalos, lions, Masai giraffe, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, zebra, topi, bush baby, leopard and bushbuck coupled with large concentration of bird life; over 525 species identified and Camping in the Northern part of the park at Mutumba campsite.

Day 4: 21st August 2022 - Morning Game Drive

Responsible Travel AfricaWake up for an early game drive at 5am in search of early risers like Hyena. Have breakfast at Kilala plains at 9am, continue with a short game drive and after we drive to Indiani Volcanoes Residence at Volcano National Park for an overnight stay.

Day 5: 22nd August 2022 - Bisoke Hike

You’ll be driven to the park headquarters at 6:30am for briefing about the hike. Bisoke, like all the peaks in the Virunga Mountain Range, is a volcano created by rift action on the forming divergent boundary of the East African Rift which is slowly bisecting the African plate. The mountain reached a height of 3,711 meters (12,175 ft) after its last eruption in 1957. Bisoke has the largest crater lake of the range.

Mt Bisoke stands at 3711m, it has the typical conic shape of a “perfect” volcano and in its crater lies a deep crater lake. The high elevation demands extra strength of climbers and the whole excursion can take between 5 hours and the whole day depending on the speed of the walk and the frequency of stops. The ascent typically takes around 3 hours.

During the climb, you will cross a series of different vegetation habitats starting with bamboo forests, then moving into Hagenia – Hypericum forest and finally moving through Senecio – Lobelia bush near the summit. After the experience we drive to Palm Garden Resort at Gisenyi.

NOTE: It is possible to do Gorilla tracking instead of Bisoké for an extra fee.

Day 6: 23rd August 2022 - Congo Nile Trail Hiking Gisenyi to Cyimbili

Responsible Travel AfricaThis morning after a hearty breakfast, we will pack our bags and depart from Ruvavu to Cyimbiri village. Along the way interact with the local community and get to know their culture, how they live their daily lives. Check into our accommodation at Cyimbiri and relax before our delicious dinner is served.

Day 7: 24th August, 2022 - Cyimbili To Kinunu

Today, hike mainly near or along the Lake Kivu and passing through small villages and harbors, along the trail you will enjoy the charming views of the amazing landscapes, bird watching, fishing activities, all the way through coffee and banana plantations. Overnight stay at Kinunu guest house.

Day 8: 25th August, 2022 - Kinunu To Bumba

This morning we have a leisurely breakfast, pack our day packs, and start to this challenging but walkable stage. It gives hikers an opportunity to walk around rolling hills and have a great view of the crystal-clear water of the Lake Kivu. Overnight stay in Bumba.

Day 9: 26th August, 2022 - Bumba To Karongi/Kibuye

Today’s hike, you will continue enjoying the beauty of Rwanda through its rolling hills while taking pictures on your adventure to Congo Nile Trail, a visit to INGE-BAHO COOPERATIVE known for its weaving and woodcarving activities or Bee keeping experience. Stop at Nkomero Center to savor our packed lunch and later transfer to kibuye by boat for an overnight stay at Rebero Kivu Resort.

Day 10: 27th August, 2022 - Island Hopping

Responsible Travel Africa You will head for a boat trip to visit different islands such as Peace Island, Monkey Island and Napoleon Island named because it has the shape of Napoleon’s hat. Napoleon Island is home to a large colony of bats which a short climb brings you face-to-face with them. Later after lunch, you will drive to Nyungwe National Park for dinner and overnight stay EAR Gisakura Guesthouse.

Day 11: 28th August, 2022 - Nyungwe + Hiking Bigugu Trail

After breakfast at 8am, you will be driven to the park reception, for briefing and setting off with a 6 -7 hours hiking of Bigugu Trail.

This trail takes you to the highest peak in Nyungwe park, it offers incredible flora and – on a clear day – views of Lake Kivu as well as hills and islands belonging to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dinner and overnight at EAR Gisakura Guesthouse.

Day 12: 29th August, 2022 - Waterfall Hike

Responsible Travel AfricaAfter breakfast and with packed, you will go for waterfall hike, Nyungwe’s biggest waterfall and the inspiration for the trail’s name” isumo means waterfall in Kinyarwanda”. At roughly 17 m in height, it is even more impressive for the force with which it shoots through a narrow gap into a stunning amphitheater, lined with fluttering fronds of ferns, flowers and lianas, all thriving in the mist zone of the fall. There are caves in the overhanging cliffs, and a rainbow in the spray on sunny days. Three km to the east, and 100 m higher in elevation, lies the bottom of the thirteen square kilometer Kamiranzovu Marsh, which drains over the rim of this water-carved canyon. Dinner and Overnight at EAR Gisakura Guesthouse.

Day 13: 30th August, 2022 - Back to Kigali

After Breakfast at 10am, you will be transferred to Kigali to connect with your international flight back home.
