Trip overview
Venture into the backcountry to immerse yourself into Rwanda’s culture and interact with locals, hike through the misty forest and meet the rare beautiful golden monkeys, before cruising on twin lakes to the remote island. Watch the sun set and the first stars to come out around a campfire roasting maize while listening to the tales of Rwanda
Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your local guide and escorted from the Kigali International Airport to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll go for a short Kigali City tour for astounding views of Africa’s cleanest and green city. Learn about the history, culture and the country’s recovery process and development from a dark history.
Day 2: Cultural Heritage and Banana Beer Making
Drive to the north with a stopover at Ikirenge Culture Village for an enriching experience into Rwanda’s history and cultural heritage. Enjoy a traditional lunch made with ingredients fresh from the area before heading to Redrocks for banana beer experience. Participate in banana beer production to understand the chemistry about the process of brewing a local beer from bananas fruits and learn how solid waste from banana fibers can be used to produce handmade eco-friendly paper. Overnight camping
Day 3 : Village Walk and Basket Weaving
Depart after breakfast for a guided village walk for the true essence of village life and discover how a day is shaped in the life of the rural Rwandans. Later in the afternoon join local women association for basket making weaving process. Learn the long history and culture of basket weaving. Overnight camping.
Day 4: Sacred Forest and Canoeing
You will be visiting Buhanga Eco Park; a sacred forest full of myth and legend known for coronation rituals of Rwandan kings. Walk on trails made entirely from cut lava beneath the cover of tall majestic trees as well as creeping and crawling plants as you are ushered in by beautiful colorful butterflies and various bird species singing in the air. Proceed with Canoeing along Mukungwa River.
Pass through some of the most stunning countryside Rwanda has to offer. Overnight stay at the lodge
Day 5: Dye Your Own Yarn and Learn to Crochet
Diving into the experience of preparing the yarn and discover how the women create organic yarn and dye it naturally with native plant materials. You’ll finish with your own custom dyed yarn for knitting, crochet or weaving to create a completely unique piece. Overnight stay at the lodge
Day 6: Golden Monkey Trekking and Iby’iwacu Culture Village
Early breakfast before trekking into the jungle in search for the playful and beautiful golden monkeys’ endemic to Virunga Mountain Range; they are only found in three countries -Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Afternoon head to Iby’Iwacu Culture Village for enchanting cultural experience
Day 7: Bisoke Hike and Twin Lakes
Early morning hike to the summit of a Mt Bisoke, a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains reaching to 3,711m, you’ll be trekking through a number of different vegetation zones and a crater lake awaits at the top. After lunch enjoy a leisure boat ride on twin lakes and witness spectacle tropical sunsets. Also, you will be reward with a breath of fresh air, spectacular views of green vegetation and some birds of the water shores. Cruise to the Island for overnight camping. Savor local food prepared over an open fire for a meal unlike any other, topped by campfire fun and stargazing.
Day 8: Secluded Island
Wake up away from the clatter of urban life and get to enjoy the backdrop scenery of living by the lakeside. You will be welcomed with a delicious breakfast, before enjoying morning of adventure. In the afternoon we will cruise to the shores and drive back to Kigali. After settling into your digs, we’ll hit the town for some dinner and drinks.
Day 9: Departure
We’ll kick off the morning with a cup of coffee at Question Coffee before heading to Niyo Art Gallery. After lunch transfer to the airport for your flight home.
