Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Your Responsible Africa Travel guide will pick you up from Kigali International airport and transfer your Gisozi Hill Eco lodge. Check in, acclimatize and later head to Kigali Genocide Memorial to pay homage to the victims of 1994 genocide against Tutsi. The memorial honors the memory of more than one million Rwandans killed in 1994 genocide. Return to the lodge for overnight stay.
Day 2: Nyamata Genocide Memorial and Reconcilliation Village
After breakfast, transfer to the Nyamata Genocide Memorial for a deeply saddening and moving look into the reality of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi. The Ntarama church was converted into a genocide memorial on the 14th April 1995 and was dedicated to over 5000 people who lost their lives in this place. After paying homage to the victims continue with a heart-warming and informative visit to the Reconciliation Village where perpetrators and victims are living side by side as part of the healing process. Engage in different activities ranging from agricultural, cooking and basket weaving lessons with local women. Overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 3: Njagama Women’s Farm Tour and Farm House
Watch women tending the Njagama women’s organic farm and discover sustainable farming techniques, which enable them to grow a broad range of crops. Gain an appreciation for their talents and hard work, by enjoy the bounty of their harvest in dishes served for lunch. In the afternoon join women in farm house where they make organic yoghurt with various flavors. Learn how these products are made, taste samples and listen as the women share how their new skills are enabling them to earn income, support their families and send their children to school. Day 4: Coffee Experience
You will be taken on a walk around a coffee plantation to learn about how coffee is grown, processed before finally getting to taste different varieties of the final product. You will then be transferred to Kigali. Overnight camping
Day 5: Pfunda Tea Estate And Hot Spring
After breakfast, drive to Rubavu with a stopover at Pfunda Tea Estate. Experience how tea in Rwanda is picked, dried, fermented, packed, and drunk. Proceed to Rubavu for lunch before a boat ride to the hot spring.
Day 6: Congo - Nile Hike (Rubavu - Cyimbiri)
Duration: 5 hours
Length: 16.5 km
This morning after a hearty breakfast, we will pack our bags and depart from Ruvavu to Cyimbiri village. Along the way interact with the local community and get to know their culture, how they live their daily lives. Check into our accommodation at Cyimiri and relax before our delicious dinner is served.
Day 7: Congo - Nile Hike (Cyimbiri – Kinunu)
Duration: 4 hours
Length: 13.4 km
Mainly near or along the Lake Kivu and passing through small villages and harbors, along the trail you will enjoy the charming views of the amazing landscapes, bird watching, fishing activities, all the way through coffee and banana plantations. Overnight stay in Kinunu
Day 8: Congo - Nile Hike (Kinunu - Bumba)
Duration: 7 hours
Length: 24 km
This morning we have a leisurely breakfast, pack our day packs and start to this challenging but walkable stage. It gives hikers an opportunity to walk around rolling hills and have a great view of the crystal clear water of the Lake Kivu. Overnight stay in Bumba
Day 9: Congo - Nile Hike (Bumba - Karongi)
Duration: 5 hours
Length: 15.9 km
Our final day’s hike, you will continue enjoying the beauty of Rwanda through its rolling hills while taking last pictures on your adventure to Congo Nile Trail, a visit to INGE-BAHO COOPERATIVE known for its weaving and woodcarving activities or Bee keeping experience. Stop at Nkomero Center to savor our packed lunch and later transfer to kibuye by car for an overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 10: Boat Ride and Environmental Museum
This morning you can sleep in or rise early to witness Africa sunrise! After breakfast, we will head out for a boat ride to explore Lake Kivu and its islands. After lunch you will relax on the shore and later visit the environmental museum, the first of its kind on the continent, the museum looks at renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. It also houses a traditional herbal medicine garden on the rooftop. Overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 11: Departure
After breakfast, your Responsible Travel guide will meet at the hotel lobby for your transfer back Kigali International Airport for departure.
