Trip overview
Step back in time to see how the Batwa lived and hunted for millennia in the Bwindi, get to know their story and contribute where you can. Hike up and down the hills through the thick sticky muddy impenetrable forest to meet the mountain gorillas. Learn about the fascinating yet tough process of salt mining at Lake Katwe before a culture experience at Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve and hike in the stunning lower ranges of the Rwenzori mountains.
Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
On your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be welcomed by Responsible Travel Africa representative and transferred to the hotel in Kampala.
Day 2: Drive to Bwindi National Park
After breakfast, check out of accommodation and drive 6-8hours to Bwindi Forest National Park. You will have a first stopover at the Equator monument in Kayabwe for photography where the earth is divided into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Continue south westwards while enjoying Ugandan local livelihood. You will have a second stopover in Mbarara and visit Igongo Art Center before enjoying a delicious lunch. Later proceed to the jungle for an overnight
Day 3: : Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Today, after breakfast, with your packed lunches you will drive to the park headquarters where park officials will brief you about gorilla trek rules and regulations. Next, you will be grouped into 8 individuals, be allocated a gorilla family to trek then head to the forest accompanied by guides and rangers as you begin you search for gorillas. Once we find the Mountain Gorillas, we spend 1 hour watching them feed, groom and interact with each other. From here, meet your guide and drive back to the lodge for overnight
Day 4: Batwa Experience
The Batwa were the original dwellers of the ancient forest and were known as the ‘keepers of the forest’. Enjoy your breakfast before an incredible hike in the rain forest with Batwa guides. Step back in time to see how the Batwa lived and hunted for millennia in the Bwindi. Learn about medicinal plants, listen to ancient legends and traditional songs, watch energetic dances, and join in on a hunting party. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 5: Ride 4 Women And Transfer To Queen Elizabeth National Park
Join ladies at Ride 4 Women and learn to weave baskets, cook local dishes and watch the women of the community showcase their culture through traditional dance or even better, learn to dance with them. Later in the evening you will drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park for an overnight.
Day 6: Katwe Salt Mining And Kazinga Chanel
After breakfast, drive to Lake Katwe salt pans for unique insight into the fascinating yet tough process of salt mining, as well as provide an alternative income for Katwe villagers. In the afternoon, an unforgettable experience awaits you on Kazinga Chanel. Cruise just meters from hundreds of enormous hippos and buffalos while elephants linger on the shoreline. Day 7: Transfer To Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve And Hike To The Crater Lakes
Morning after breakfast, you will drive to Lake Nkubura Nature Reserve and Camp Site. Have a leisure lunch at the campsite before exploring the five crater lakes during an enjoyable circular walk. You will learn about crater lake formation whilst viewing birds, trees and beautiful scenery.
Day 8: Rwaihamba Market And Top Of The World Viewpoint Hike
Bike to the largest village markets in Uganda situated just 2 km from the Nature Reserve; the weekly market days (Mondays and Thursdays) sell an abundance of quality food, drink, clothes and local crafts. Later in the afternoon, hike to the Top of the World viewpoint for the stunning view of the three crater lakes and the nearby Kibale National Park. Overnight stay at the lodge or a homestay
Day 9: Mountains of The Moon
After breakfast, lace your hiking boots, grab your packed lunch and meet your local guide who will take you on a full day’s hike in the stunning lower ranges of the Rwenzori mountains, with a visit to the Rwangimba Hot Springs. Overnight at the lodge or homestay.
Day 10: Transfer to Entebbe
Free morning to relax at the lodge. Later drive to Kampala with a lunch stopover and souvenir shopping along the way.
Day 11: Departure
After breakfast, your Responsible Travel guide will meet at the lodge for your transfer back to Entebbe International Airport for departure.
