Trip overview

Trek to a series of beautiful trails in one of the oldest rainforests in Africa in 13 Days of Hiking and Biking. Trails takes you past waterfalls, viewpoints, and not to mention thousands of plants species before exploring Rwanda’s countryside on a bike. Cycle through primitive dirt roads and encounter some of the most spectacular scenery and villages with locals going about their life.

 

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Your Responsible Africa Travel guide will pick you up from Kigali International airport and transfer you to Gisozi Hill Eco lodge. Depending on your arrival time you will visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Day 2: Coffee Experience and Transfer to Nyungwe National Park

In the morning after breakfast, you will head south to Huye to visit a coffee plantation and learn how the country produces some of the world’s best coffee beans and how coffee seeds grow into beans and become the flavorful drink in your cup. Prepare to do a little work, drink a lot of coffee, and learn something entirely new. After lunch proceed to Nyungwe National Park for overnight

Day 4: Bigugu Trail Hike

Starting point: Nyabishwati

Duration: 6 hours

Length: 13.2 km

Today’s hike is 13.2 kilometers and about 6 hours on an elevation between 2950 to 2367 meters. Hiking to the top of mount Bigugu, you will be embraced with the most outstanding 360 degrees overview of the entire park from above. Overnight stay at the lodge

Day 5: Igishigishi Trail Hike and Transfer to Karongi

Difficulty: Medium
Duration: 2 hours
Length: 2.1 km

This morning walk 60m above the forest floor, over the tree canopy, along the 200m, rope-style metal bridge for breathtaking views across the forest. After lunch, drive to Karongi for overnight.

Day 6: Boat Cruise and Island Hopping

Spend the morning exploring the Lake Kivu and its islands on a boat and afternoon at leisure. Admire a beautiful sunset from the deck before enjoying a sumptuous dinner. Overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 7: Congo - Nile Biking (Karongi to Bumba)

Distance: 31.2 Km

Maximum elevation: Approx.800m

Effective Riding: 3.5h

After breakfast you will start your first day Biking. This is the Biking into banana plantations, Bike in the middle of coffee plantations, cross beautiful rivers and bridges. On arrival to the hotel you will have lunch, relax and go for an evening walk to stretch your legs for the next Biking.

Day 8: Congo - Nile Biking (Bumba to Kinunu)

Distance: 28.5km

Maximum elevation: Approx. 1250m

Effective Riding: 3 to 4 hours

After breakfast, resume your biking and head to Kinunu. This is another beautiful part of trail as you will be interacting with locals, crossing the beautiful valley of Coko and biking alongside the shores of Lake Kivu. Have lunch stop at Musasa village and later proceed to Kinunu. Refresh at guest house before a boat ride to Bugarura community; an island inhabited with about 2000 people. Explore the village; enjoy cultural performance and storytelling on their lives then after cruise back to Guest house

Day 9: Congo - Nile Biking (Kinunu to Rubavu)

Distance: 36.5km

Maximum elevation: about 1300m

Effective riding: 4 hours

After breakfast at 07:30am, you will ride to Rubavu. You will ride overland agricultural village of Boneza and Rwinyoni. This trail leads through cassava, banana and coffee plantations.

Day 10: Nyamyumba Hot Spring and Transfer to Rubavu

Visit Nyamyumba hot spring you can get an unbelievable massage from the locals here. The hot springs are the result of nearby volcanic activity, and the locals swear by their medicinal powers. Expect locals and tourists bathing in the hot springs, while others caked the mud on their skin. After lunch, you will transfer to Volcanoes National Park for overnight.

Day 11: Bisoke Hike and Twin Lakes

Early morning hike to the summit of a Mt Bisoke, a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains reaching to 3,711m, you’ll be trekking through a number of different vegetation zones and a crater lake awaits at the top. After lunch enjoy a leisure boat ride on twin lakes and witness spectacle tropical sunsets. Also, you will be reward with a breath of fresh air, spectacular views of green vegetation and some birds of the water shores.

Day 12: Departure

Breakfast at the hotel before driving back to Kigali for departure
