“In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat, “ wrote the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey, “are great Volcanoes  towering almost 15000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest.” Journey to the Volcanoes National Park to see where renowned conservationist Dian Fossey worked to protect the endangered mountain gorillas while contributing to the protection of these beautiful creatures and the surrounding communities.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

At 9am, you’ll be picked by your professional driver guide and transfer to Volcanoes National Park. Later after lunch you’ll visit Karisoke Research center (Ellen DeGeneres Campus) and learn about the legacy of Diana Fossey of preserving mountain gorillas. The Centre, whose primary role is to help in the preservation of mountain gorillas, was built in memory of renowned gorilla conservationist

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Ib’iwacu Cultural Village

On the day of trekking, you will wake up early in the morning, drive to the park headquarters where you will be briefed on gorilla trekking etiquettes. You will then be separated in a group of 8 people and a gorilla family to trek will be assigned to the group. Accompanied by a guide and rangers, you’ll hike into the forest in search of the gorillas. When you come to face to face with the largest living primate , no fence, just a few meters away from you, you will be allowed one hour watching them feed, resting, glooming and young ones swinging in trees. The young ones might occasionally stray closer than expected, but as long as you follow your guide’s instructions you will be just fine.

What to wear and carry:

  • Wear long trousers, long sleeves and hiking waterproof boats (to minimize the impact on wildlife, it is recommended to wear shades of green or brown).
  • Carry gloves, a rain jacket, and a camera.

Day 3: Lake Kivu and Transfer to Kigali

Today explore the beauty of Lake Kivu from the seat of kayak. After a detailed safety briefing, set off on a great day’s adventure, or simply relax amid the breathtaking scenery of the surroundings. Later after lunch, you will drive back to Kigali

Package cost based on two people: $2382 per person sharing including a gorilla permit of $1500
